How to Retire an American Flag with Respect
Share
Over time, even the most proudly flown flag will fade, tear, or become unserviceable. When that happens, it’s important to retire it in a respectful and dignified way. According to the U.S. Flag Code, the preferred method is to burn the flag in a solemn ceremony.
If you’re unable or uncomfortable doing this yourself, many local veterans’ organizations, Boy Scouts, or Girl Scouts regularly conduct official flag retirement ceremonies. They’ll ensure your flag is honored properly as it’s laid to rest.
By retiring a flag with care, we show our respect not only for the symbol, but for the nation it represents.
